5 Steps To Build A Daily Hydration Habit

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop I'll drink!

Being hydrated is a state I have fought my whole life. I have no idea why, but if anyone has any clue I am all ears!

It started young

One of my earliest memories is of my mom berating my for not finishing the diluted juice in my juice box. Remember those! In hindsight, I probably didn't love the plasticky taste, but I remember the dire threats of my kidneys giving up.

Why is staying hydrated important?

According to this article there are at least seven science-based benefits associated with drinking enough water. Keeping hydrated can be the key to maintaining good energy levels, preventing headaches and very importantly - preventing hangovers!

What helps?

According to this research it is possible to build new healthy habits - yay! And there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of success:
  1. Decide on a goal. For example, when it comes to hydration you might want to drink 6 glasses of water daily

  2. Choose a simple action that will get you towards your goal (e.g. drink a glass of water)

  3. Plan when and where you will do your chosen action (e.g. whenever I walk into the kitchen)

  4. Every time you encounter that time and place do that action. Here at Super Streak we would also add:

  5. Reward yourself for achieving your daily goal!

I am using all of the above to (hopefully) finally tackle my resistance to water once and for all. Each morning when I make my coffee I fill a large water bottle with two litres of water, and place a large glass next to the water bottle (as I don't really like drinking from it).

Then throughout the day each time I walk into my kitchen I drink at least a sip of water, but usually more, with the aim of finishing the two litres (refilling the glass as needed). This strategy really seems to be working for me, but I think I am someone who needs visual reminders to get anything done!

The great news is that, according to the research: "Missing the occasional opportunity to perform the behaviour did not seriously impair the habit formation process".

Which is why we've included our "Keep Going" stickers. Missing the occasional day won't derail your habit formation so if you do, give yourself a sticker and keep going the next day.
